Then, we discussed the writing into the day as a whole class.
- Your first draft may or may not be your best draft. You may be doing your reader a disservice without revision. You're missing important steps without revision
- You should always write several drafts until you're comfortable with it.
- In the past, if I ad written multiple drafts, I could have had better writing.
- Writing starts messy and gets neater. Revision is the passage between the two.
- A writer might not understand the full potential of the piece if he/she doesn't revise.
- There's freedom in just writing whatever comes into your mind.
- I think all writers start with bad writing.
- I used to think that writers just jumped out of bed writing perfectly.
- This class is a foundation for writing.
- It's still going to be a process regardless of whether you're a professional writer or a student.
- If you're absorbing information in class, the information can help you in future classes and in your professional life. If you're in neutral in class, you're training yourself to be in neutral in your professional life. Writing opens your mind and gets you out of neutral.
- There's a misconception that professional writers write perfectly. Instead, it's practice. This class allows us to practice.
- You don't have to be a professional to do good work.
- There is gifted (naturally born) and there is talent (you can learn it).
- Even if you have natural gifts, you should still practice.
What is a writer?
- A person who puts thoughts on paper.
- A person who writes for an audience.
- It's more than just writing words; you can also write music.
- Anybody who puts words on paper and touches at least one person.
- When you journal, you are your own audience.
- Anyone who feels a need to express his/her thoughts.
- It's hard to classify writers because it's subject, just like all art.
In small groups, we discussed the questions on slide 24 of the PowerPoint. In whole group, we said:
- Revision in my past has been editing symbols.
- Most teachers revise your paper with no direction about how to get better. It's like they're on a pedestal and the students are below them.
- It depends on the teacher. Some just want to get the grade out. Others want to help you.
- It might depend on how they were taught and/or what they want to teach you.
We discussed the definition of revision with the handout on Moodle. We also completed the Revision Activity in small groups. We determined that the first example is not thoughtful revision if only one sentence is deleted and a few words are changed. It is thoughtful revision if the writer took out unnecessary sentences throughout the paper. The second example could be thoughtful revision if the writer was considering reorganization throughout the paper (instead of just moving one sentence in the whole paper). The third example is thoughtful revision.
